Frequently asked questions
General questions
How does the first consultation work?
It takes place online — by video call, phone or messenger. The lawyer clarifies the circumstances, reviews the documents and explains the options and risks. If further work is needed, you receive a plan, timeframes and a fee. It usually lasts up to 45 minutes.
How much do a lawyer’s services cost?
A consultation costs from $45. We publish an indicative price for every service on the Prices page. The final price depends on the scope of work and is fixed in the agreement before work begins.
Can I work with you if I am in another city or abroad?
Yes. Consultations, signing the agreement and exchanging documents all happen online. If attendance is needed in court, at a Territorial Recruitment Centre (TCC/ТЦК) or during an investigative action, we arrange the lawyer’s participation in advance.
Do you guarantee a result?
No conscientious lawyer can guarantee the decision of a court or a state body — this is also prohibited by the Rules of Advocates’ Ethics. Instead, we provide an honest assessment of the prospects before work begins, quality work within the scope of the agreement and regular reports.
How is confidentiality protected?
The fact that you contacted a lawyer, everything you tell us and your documents are covered by legal professional privilege (Art. 22 of the Law of Ukraine “On the Bar and Practice of Law”). Please do not include sensitive details in the website form — we will discuss them in person.
What is a legal services agreement?
It is a written agreement between you and the lawyer. It sets out the scope of work, timeframes, the fee and the payment terms. The agreement can be signed online with an electronic signature (for example, via Diia.Signature).
How quickly will a lawyer respond to my request?
We respond to enquiries as quickly as possible during working hours. If the matter is urgent — for example, a search, a detention or the last day of an appeal deadline — call us directly.
What documents should I prepare for the consultation?
Anything relating to the situation: decisions, rulings, summonses, contracts, correspondence, certificates. If you have no documents, that is not a problem: the lawyer will advise you how to obtain them.
Can legal costs be recovered from the other party?
In court cases, yes: the court may order the losing party to pay the costs of professional legal assistance if they are supported by documents. We prepare these documents from day one.
Do you work with businesses on an ongoing basis?
Yes, we offer retainer support: contracts, corporate matters, compliance, claims and consultations every month for a fixed fee. Details are on the Corporate law page.
Can I get an online consultation with a military lawyer?
Yes. We hold consultations by video call or phone, and you send documents via messenger or email. Most of the follow-up work is also remote: advocate's requests, complaints and claims are filed electronically, and the lawyer can take part in court hearings by videoconference. So the city you are in usually does not matter.
Can a lawyer get me "released" from mobilisation?
No, and no lawyer can honestly promise that. The grounds for deferral or discharge are set by law, and decisions are made by the TCC, command or a court. A lawyer's job is to check whether you have lawful grounds, support them properly with documents, protect your rights in the procedure and appeal an unlawful decision if there is one.
What should I do if TCC officers stop me?
Stay calm and do not physically resist. Ask them to identify themselves and show their service IDs, and present your military registration document, either on paper or electronically in the Reserv+ app. Do not sign documents you disagree with without adding written remarks. Tell your relatives where you are and contact a lawyer, who will explain the next steps.
What documents should I prepare for the first consultation?
Bring whatever relates to your question: your military registration document or service member ID, call-up notices, offence reports and decisions, MMC certificates and decisions, medical records, reports (raports), orders and replies to your applications. If you have no documents, that is fine: describe the situation in your own words, and the lawyer will tell you what to obtain and how.
How much does a military lawyer cost?
A consultation on mobilisation costs from $45; fees for other services are shown on their pages. The fee depends on the complexity of the case, the volume of documents and the number of court hearings. The court fee is paid separately, although the law provides exemptions for certain categories of persons, including combat veterans. The final price is fixed in the legal services agreement.
When should you contact a lawyer in a criminal case?
As early as possible: as soon as you receive a summons for questioning, before the questioning takes place, or immediately after a search. The first procedural decisions often determine how the case develops. You can also contact us at any later stage — we will review the case file and assess what can be done in the current situation.
Can I refuse to give testimony?
Yes. Article 63 of the Constitution of Ukraine guarantees the right not to testify against oneself or one's close relatives, and Article 42 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC/КПК) enshrines the suspect's right to remain silent and refuse to testify. Whether to exercise this right or to give testimony later, after a consultation, is a decision best made together with your defence lawyer.
Can I work with a criminal defence lawyer online?
We do a large part of the work remotely: reviewing the case file, preparing motions and complaints, consultations. Participation in investigative actions and court hearings is possible in person or by video link where the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC/КПК) allows it and the investigator or court agrees. The format of participation is set out in the agreement.
How does the status of a suspect differ from that of a witness?
A witness gives testimony about circumstances known to them and must appear when summoned. A person becomes a suspect after being served a notice of suspicion or being arrested, and from that moment has the full range of defence rights under Article 42 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC/КПК). A witness may also attend questioning with a lawyer, which is advisable if there is a risk that their status may change.
How is the cost of defence determined?
The cost depends on the stage of the proceedings, the volume of the case file and the number of procedural actions. A consultation in a criminal case costs from $45, defence during the pre-trial investigation from $660 per month, and defence in court is priced after reviewing the case. The final cost and payment terms are set out in the legal services agreement.
Can we work with you entirely online?
Yes. We hold consultations by video call, agree documents electronically and sign them with a qualified electronic signature (QES/КЕП) where the law permits. Registration actions for LLCs and sole proprietors can mostly be done online as well. Personal attendance may be needed, for example, for certain notarial acts or at a bank, and we warn you about such steps in advance.
How does a shareholder agreement differ from the charter?
The charter is a public document that anyone can see in the state register. A shareholder (corporate) agreement is concluded between the members themselves, and its content is usually confidential. It covers matters that are inconvenient to put in the charter: voting procedures, exit terms, sale of shares, conflict resolution. For an LLC (TOV), such an agreement is provided for by Article 7 of the Law of Ukraine “On Limited and Additional Liability Companies”.
How much does a legal retainer cost and what does it include?
From $265 per month. The scope depends on the company's needs: the number of requests, contracts to review and time for consultations. Before we start, we define a package of hours or tasks, the communication channel and response times. All of this is recorded in the agreement so that you know in advance what you are paying for and what happens if there are more tasks.
What should we do if a bank requests documents or has restricted our account?
Do not send the first reply that comes to mind. First we find out exactly what the bank is requesting and on what basis. Then we help gather documents on the source of funds, the nature of the transactions and the ownership structure, and prepare an explanation. If the bank has restricted service, we assess how to challenge its actions. The final decision rests with the bank, so it is important to respond fully and consistently the first time.
Can a company be registered with a foreign founder?
Yes. A foreign individual or legal entity may be a member of a Ukrainian LLC (TOV). Documents of a foreign company usually require an apostille or consular legalisation and a notarised translation, and a foreign individual needs a Ukrainian taxpayer registration number. The ultimate beneficial owner must also be disclosed. The law imposes restrictions on certain categories of persons, in particular those connected with the aggressor state.
